Submarine Fan Reservoirs

Until recently, submarine fans were considered unique to lowstand systems. Now, exploration geologists are looking at the potential of deep-water sands in highstand deposits.

Our answers:

  • Deltas can easily reach the shelf edge on a narrow shelf, such as in this example from the Mahakam Delta (Figure 1).
  • Even during relative sea-level rise, high sediment supply can deliver sand to slope canyons to feed highstand fans (Figure 2).
